Cubes from Nets

As explained in the paper (Bridges 2007, Identifying the path of a weaving element), it is much quicker to construct a cube from a net printed onto card than to weave one. This is sufficient for exploring the mathematical aspects of these cubes. However, makers who do wish to weave a cube will also find this information helpful – either for making a template for their woven cube or to have as a ‘hand model’ for use as a guide when weaving.

Follow this link to a page which show the outlines for nets of cubes from 0,1 through to 5,5.

Masters of grids are provided for those who would like to construct other cubes.

Scans of the nets of the above cubes with the loop marked are also provided. The different individual faces of the cube are also shown in each case.

The cube nets are all shown in a cruciform layout with the same orientation. Below is shown the numbering of the faces of a die if set out in this way:

1

2 3 5 4

6

Finally, there are photographs of the cubes made up from the nets. When viewed together with the nets a clear idea of the whole cube may be obtained.
